Pre-Seed Burndown

Start With a Clean Field

Reducing early season weed pressure is key to reducing competition from weeds that can rob moisture, nutrients and sunlight from your crop, which can negatively impact crop yield.

University of Saskatchewan research shows that where weed competition is significant, an early burn off application can have a greater influence on crop yield than an early seeding date.[1]

Fight Against Resistance

A report from 2015 showed herbicide resistance cost Canadian growers an estimated $1.1 to $1.5 billion annually due to increased herbicide use and decreased yield and quality.[2]

In Canada, 46 per cent of all glyphosate applied in 2015 was at pre-plant/pre-emergence. In Western Canada, 69 per cent of that glyphosate was applied alone, increasing the risk of selection of resistant weeds. [3]

When it comes to preventing herbicide resistance, using tank mix partners can be more effective than alternating single-mode applications.[4] Selecting an add-in with a different mode of action is one of the most effective ways to prevent the development and spread of herbicide resistance.

Pre-seed timing is one of the easiest opportunities to include a tank mix partner in your herbicide application and is an excellent time to diversify your herbicide program.

The team of agronomic experts at P&H are here to help you find the best tank mix options to help you start your growing season with a clean field and prevent the spread of herbicide resistance.

Always read and follow label instructions including application rates, precautions and restrictions.

Canola

With tighter rotations leading to increased issues such as blackleg and clubroot in canola, we need to do our part to make sure glyphosate-resistant weeds don’t become the next hurdle for canola growers.

For your pre-seed herbicide application before canola, consider a tank mix partner such as:

  • Aim® EC (Group 14)
    • Aim EC provides quick pre-seed burndown, with the flexibility of seeding canola immediately after application.[5]
    • Controls all types of canola volunteers.
    • Controls glyphosate-resistant kochia.
  • CONQUER® (Group 14, 6)
    • CONQUER is the only pre-seed burndown with two active ingredients and two modes of action for use with glyphosate prior to canola.
    • Controls all types of canola volunteers.
    • Controls glyphosate-resistant kochia.

Wheat and Barley

Adding diversity to your herbicide program is an important step in controlling resistance. When planning your pre-seed burndown before planting wheat or barley, make sure you include a tank mix partner with your glyphosate. The agronomy team at P&H can help you identify which add-in is the best fit for your farm.

  • PrePass XC (Group 2, 9)
    • Control winter annuals and broadleaf weeds and get up to 21 days of extended control with PrePass.[6]
    • Controls all types of canola volunteers.
  • Express® FX (Group 2, 4)
    • When tank mixed with glyphosate, the systemic activity of Express FX provides control of key weeds such as kochia, dandelion, narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard, flixweed, stinkweed and volunteer canola.[7]
    • Controls canola volunteers.
    • Controls Group 2 and Group 9 resistant kochia.
  • BlackHawk ® EVO (Group 14, 4)
    • With two active ingredients and two modes of action, BlackHawk EVO provides contact and systemic activity on broadleaf weeds and is also a key tool for resistance management.[8]
    • Controls all types of canola volunteers.
    • Controls Kochia including Group 2-, 4-, 9-and 14-resistant biotypes.
  • 2,4-D Ester 700 (Group 4)
    • 2,4-D Ester 700 provides excellent suppression and top growth control of many perennial broadleaf weeds.
    • Controls all types of canola volunteers.

Corn and Soybeans

Weeds that emerge prior to or at planting are the most competitive with corn and soybeans. Early competition from weeds within the first weeks after planting can have a significant impact on yield potential.[9] Reduce that competition by planning a pre-seed burndown.

Corn Hybrids With Roundup Ready® 2 Technology

Before planting your corn crop, talk to the agronomy team at P&H to see which of the following glyphosate tank mix partners would be the best for your pre-seed burndown.

  • Heat® LQ (Group 14)
    • Heat LQ provides fast, complete pre-seed burndown of broadleaf weeds in as few as 3-5 days, even under cool conditions.[10]
    • Controls all types of canola volunteers.
    • Controls glyphosate-resistant kochia.
  • Dicamba (Group 4)
    • Controls glyphosate-resistant kochia.
    • Provides residual control.
  • Focus® (Group 14, 15)
    • Focus has activity on both grassy and broadleaf weeds and extends the weed control window with long lasting residual control.[11]
    • Controls glyphosate-resistant kochia.

Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® Soybeans

  • Express® FX (Group 2, 4)
    • When tank mixed with glyphosate, the systemic activity of Express FX provides control of key weeds such as kochia, dandelion, narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard, flixweed, stinkweed and volunteer canola.[12]
    • Controls Group 2 and Group 9 resistant kochia
  • Heat® LQ (Group 14)
    • Heat LQ provides fast, complete pre-seed burndown of broadleaf weeds in as few as 3-5 days, even under cool conditions.[13]
    • Controls all types of canola volunteers
    • Controls glyphosate-resistant kochia
  • Valtera (Group 14)
    • Valtera targets tough-to-control broadleaf weeds with lasting residual control for up to eight weeks.[14]
    • Controls glyphosate-resistant kochia
